The Feet of the Called

You know, I have a testimony about feet.  In fact, I’ve heard a lot about feet recently so I want to talk about it.  Let me start with my own testimony.  One of my daughters was in a very bad car accident about a year and a half ago.  Her car was totaled and the other car was totaled and a few other vehicles were involved.  There could have been many injuries or worse.  However, the only injuries (besides some minor bruises, etc.) was a single broken foot.

Praise God, right?  Well, I did praise God that that was the extent of the injuries, but it left me very confused.  Why, you ask?  Well, the Scripture above tells us that the angels are under God’s direct orders to protect us, even with specifics about hurting our feet!  Because I take the Bible at its Word, I had to ask, “Why did she break her foot, out of all things?”  I was very curious and I even took it as a sign!  Turns out, as I found out shortly after, that she was using her feet to walk rebelliously against the Lord and His instructions.  She was not ‘living under the shadow of the Most High’.  Therefore, His mighty angels were not under order to protect her.

I have a friend who is going through this same thing now.  Both his son and his wife have hurt their feet on the same week.  When I explained my testimony to him, he was in agreement that it was a similar situation his family was in.  They were not using their feet to live under His shelter.

It’s so interesting sometimes the way we ‘believers’ believe.  We read the Word and then want to claim all the promises in our lives but we somehow neglect the commands that reap the promises.  I have been guilty of it and I know we all have.  But, we have been called to …

Go.

Heal the sick.

Cast out demons.

Raise the dead.

Make disciples.

How can we do that without feet?

1 Peter 1:5 says that we should make every effort to respond to God’s promises.  So, if we see a promise in the Word, we can have faith that this promise is for us (2 Cor 1:20)!  However!  These promises usually come with commands that must be heeded in order to receive the promise!  Let’s get back to feet.  The first verse in this picture tells us, and in Romans 10 repeats that our feet are beautiful when we are doing the things mentioned in big bold print above.  God loves beautiful things and will protect these things for the glory and the honor of His name (Isaiah 48:11).  So, if we are doing what we are called to do, even our feet will be protected!

Let us respond to this promise!

I want to mention one more thing about feet.  Look at the feet in this picture.  Aren’t they beautiful?  I think these are beautiful feet and in a beautiful place!  But let me explain some things to you that you can’t see in this picture.  These feet were burned!  That’s right.  You see, as we walked along the black sand beach in Guatemala, enjoying God and His sunrise and each other, I headed back up to the sitting area.  Well, we had left our sandals at the sitting area.  The black sand get hot quick!  I was about to bring her her sandals when she said “nah, I’ll be alright”.  She then found out just how hot black sand was in the hot tropical sun!  But what could she do?  She was right in the middle of it before she realized what she had gotten herself into.  She couldn’t go back and she couldn’t keep coming without getting burned one way or another.  Once starting on the journey without her sandals, she had to continue, even if that meant burning her feet.  This is why we are told to put on the shoes of peace of the preparation of the Gospel (Ephesians 6:15).  If we are going to go into the world, even the world that appears beautiful, we must be ready!  Something may look beautiful but we must remember that this world still belongs to the enemy and we are soldiers trying to take it back like an invading force.  Things that look beautiful can still burn us!

Finally, we can learn a lesson from Jesus washing the feet of His disciples.  You see, in this picture, we innocently went for a walk on the beach to enjoy God’s creation and have Christian fellowship with each other.  But look how dirty the world made us, simply by walking in it!  We were not doing anything evil, we were led astray by anything or happen into sin.  We simply walked in the world and our feet came out dirty.  Let us wash each others feet with the Word of God (Ephesians 5:26) to ensure that we are always clean and spotless and protected, living under His shelter forever.

PS – In light of what I’m sharing, we need to realized that these promises ARE to us and for us!  These are not just commands and promises to the men of old.  As we go through this Daily Word together, lets remember what Jesus said in Matthew 22:31 (“have you not read what was spoken to you by God”) and echoed in Hebrews 12;5 (“the encouraging words God spoke to you as his children”) and then again in 2 Peter 1:5 (“In view of all this, make every effort to respond to God’s promises”).
